Winter jobs

2nd March 2022

Storm Eunice Fursdon EstateWinter is a quieter time at Fursdon (or that's the idea anyway) when the house, garden and tea-room are closed and we can concentrate on the ongoing schedule of maintenance, conservation and repair that is part and parcel of life at a historic house and estate.

It has been a mild winter down in Devon... with less rain than usual, though Storm Eunice certainly made her presence felt with many trees down across the farm and woodland. We are still getting to grips with the aftermath and the damage caused. Luckily, Scout, our rather naughty Bedlington Whippet has been helping, and we've even managed to plant a few new trees in place of the ones we've lost, such as this Wych Elm to replace the fallen oak at the top of the Meadow Garden.

A good indoor activity... for those wild and windy winter days, we were honoured to have renowned library conservator Caroline Bendix visit us for a conservation day in Fursdon's library recently. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject was infectious, and our team of volunteers learnt so much about handling and repairing books that date back hundreds of years in some cases. An ongoing project!

Library Conservation Fursdon House

There's no such thing as a free lunch... and with the gravel looking patchy out front, we made the most of the troop of Fursdons staying recently and put them all to work, spreading new gravel down the driveway in front of the house. We hope visitors will appreciate the extra 'crunch' when visiting later this year!

Last but not least... we are delighted to welcome Barry Milden and Rachel Edwards to the Fursdon team! Keeping on top of everything here is an never-ending process and we are grateful for the hard-work of our small but brilliant band of part-time staff and volunteers, who help us to keep things looking beautiful and running smoothly.

We look forward to welcoming visitors back for our first opening of the season on Easter Monday. See Opening Times & Prices for more information.
